GABRIEL BARBATO VERBEEK
was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I've lived in several countries, cities. Curacao is now home to me. From my spot in Willemstad, I invite you to travel my story, my life, through my art.
After almost four decades working and designing as an Architect in Spain, in Argentina and Ecuador, I could easily categorize myself as that. It would be easy to do so. It might even be precise, but not true. It is, as Walt Whitman once said: "We are multitudes". Four years ago, I relocated to Curacao and decided to paint again, after years of painting only occasionally. I used to do it whenever architecture allowed me to and, of course, I have transited several phases. When I was a kid, figurative art with puntillist technique. Later on, abstract during my years in Spain. Thereafter, provocative sculpture. Curacao has been a massive change in my lifestyle, in my everyday life. A different rhythm. And definitively, very relevant one. Different echoes, different light, totally different colors. Curacao brought me back COLOUR, of the immeasurable sky, of the turquoise ocean, of birds, wind, of vegetation. Currently, my art is full of abstract: that is where I am now. I would definitively define myself as an individual that needs to paint.
